From Kumasi, Ghana’s great safari at Mole is a long drive north. Here’s the route, the distance and the right vehicle.

For visitors based in Kumasi, Ghana’s premier safari at Mole National Park is a serious but rewarding drive north. The park’s savanna shelters elephants, antelope, baboons and more, with the famous lodge overlooking a waterhole. It’s a long haul through the middle belt into the north, best planned as a multi-day trip with the right vehicle.
Kumasi to Mole is roughly 380 kilometres, heading north through Techiman and on toward Damongo, where the park lies. Much of the route is good road, with the final approach through rural northern country.

Allow around six to seven hours of driving, more with stops. It’s a long day, so an early start or an overnight stop en route makes it more comfortable, and Mole itself warrants staying at least a night.
At Mole, choose between guided walking safaris and vehicle safaris, with elephants often seen at the waterhole below the lodge. The nearby Larabanga Mosque, one of West Africa’s oldest, is worth the short detour. Our Mole guide has the detail.
A sturdy SUV or 4x4 suits the distance and the park tracks, and a driver who knows the northern roads is a real asset. We quote the trip as a whole, including the driver’s overnight costs.
