Tamale is the usual gateway to Mole, with the final drive to the park now much improved. Here’s the route and the right vehicle.

Tamale, the largest city in the north, is the usual springboard for Ghana’s great safari at Mole National Park. Many visitors fly into Tamale from Accra and drive the final leg to the park — a journey that the improved road has made far more comfortable than it once was. It’s the easiest way to reach Mole, and from Tamale the savanna and its elephants are within a morning’s drive.
Tamale to Mole is roughly 180 kilometres, heading west toward Damongo and the park. Thanks to road improvements, the drive is now about four hours on a much better surface than in years past.

With regular flights from Accra, Tamale lets you skip the very long drive north and pick up a vehicle for the final leg — the approach most visitors take. Our Tamale car hire page covers local hire, and our Accra to Tamale guide the journey up if you drive.
At Mole, elephants are often seen at the waterhole below the lodge, with guided walking and vehicle safaris across the savanna. The ancient Larabanga Mosque is a short detour. Our Mole guide has the full picture.
A sturdy SUV or 4x4 suits the drive and the park, and a driver who knows the north makes it effortless. We can have a vehicle ready for you at Tamale, and quote the trip as a whole.
Tell us your dates, your group size, and whether you want a driver or self-drive, and we’ll match the right vehicle and confirm one clear price. No payment on the website.
