Tamale is the capital of the Northern Region and the hub for travel to Mole National Park, Larabanga, Bolgatanga, Wa and the border with Burkina Faso. It is about 620 km from Accra, a full day by road or an hour by air.
Distances in the north are long and many roads are unpaved, so we recommend a Toyota Fortuner or Land Cruiser Prado with a driver who knows the area. NGOs and research teams often book for one to several weeks.
Mole National Park is roughly two and a half hours from Tamale. Because the vehicle travels north for your booking, please give us as much notice as you can.

Flying takes about an hour; driving takes 11 to 12 hours. Most customers fly and have the car and driver meet them at Tamale airport.
We recommend one. The main road is tarred, but a 4x4 is more comfortable and handles park tracks and side trips.
It is possible with a Fortuner or Hilux, but distances are long and services are sparse. Most visitors take a driver.
