Driving in Ghana: what to expect

Ghana drives on the right. Main roads between the big cities are tarred, while side roads can be rough, especially after rain.

  • Keep your licence, permit and passport in the car. Police checkpoints are common and usually quick.
  • Plan long drives for daylight. Unlit vehicles, pedestrians and animals make night driving on highways tiring.
  • Watch for speed ramps at the entrance to every town.
  • Fuel stations are frequent in the south. Fill up before long stretches in the north.
  • Navigation apps work well in the cities. Download offline maps for rural areas.

What documents do I need for self-drive car rental in Ghana?

A valid driving licence, your passport or Ghana Card, and a refundable security deposit. Visitors from abroad should also carry an International Driving Permit.

How old do I have to be?

At least 23, with a licence held for two years or more.

Which cars can I drive myself?

The Toyota Yaris, Corolla, RAV4, Fortuner and Hilux. The Land Cruiser Prado and V8, the Mercedes-Benz and all buses come with a driver.

Can I drive the car outside Accra?

Yes. Tell us your route when you book so the price and the paperwork cover it.

How does the security deposit work?

You pay it when you collect the car. It is returned when the car comes back on time, with a full tank and without new damage.
