Do You Tip Drivers in Ghana?

A small but common question for visitors: should you tip your hired driver in Ghana, and how much? Here’s a straightforward guide to the etiquette, so you can do it comfortably.

It’s one of those small questions that visitors often wonder about but aren’t sure who to ask: when you hire a car with a driver in Ghana, are you supposed to tip, and if so, how much? The honest, simple answer is that tipping isn’t obligatory — your agreed price is the agreed price — but a tip for genuinely good service is appreciated and common. Here’s how to handle it comfortably.

Is it expected?

Tipping a hired driver in Ghana is not obligatory, and you should never feel pressured to do it. The price you agreed covers the service. That said, tipping for good service is a common and appreciated gesture, especially from visitors, and a driver who has looked after you well — driven carefully, been patient, shared local knowledge, helped with your bags — will genuinely value the recognition.

How much to tip

There’s no fixed rule, but as a rough guide: for a good day’s driving, a modest extra at the end is a kind thank-you; on a longer trip or tour, something in the region of 10% of the fee is a reasonable benchmark if the service was good. The right amount ultimately reflects how well you were looked after — a little more for going above and beyond, nothing owed if the service fell short.

The agreed price is the price. A tip is simply a thank-you for being looked after well — welcome when earned, never expected.

When to tip

Tips are usually given at the end — of the day, the trip or the hire — directly to the driver, in cash. There’s no need to tip per journey on a day of multiple stops; once at the end is normal. A word of genuine thanks alongside it means as much as the money.

Longer and multi-day hires

On a multi-day trip — a road tour, a family event, several days with the same driver — it’s a nice gesture to tip at the end for a driver who has looked after you throughout. Remember that on overnight trips out of town, the driver’s lodging and meals are already built into the agreed price (as our with-a-driver cost guide explains), so a tip is purely a thank-you on top, not a cost you’re expected to cover.

Beyond the tip

Money isn’t the only way to show appreciation. A driver who has given you a great day will equally value a genuine thank-you, a good word to the company, or a positive review that helps their work. If your driver was excellent, telling us so means a lot — it’s how good drivers get recognised.

Guidance reviewed October 2026; tipping is always personal and discretionary. Your agreed hire price is confirmed in writing and never depends on a tip.

Frequently asked questions

Do you tip drivers in Ghana?
It's not obligatory — your agreed price covers the service — but tipping for genuinely good service is common and appreciated, especially from visitors. Never feel pressured; reward good service as you see fit.
How much should I tip a hired driver in Ghana?
There's no fixed rule. A modest extra at the end of a good day, or around 10% on a longer trip or tour if the service was good, is a reasonable guide. The amount reflects how well you were looked after.
When do I tip the driver?
Usually at the end — of the day, trip or hire — directly to the driver in cash. There's no need to tip per journey on a day of multiple stops; once at the end is normal.
Do I need to cover the driver's meals or lodging on overnight trips?
No — on overnight trips out of town, the driver's lodging and meals are already built into the agreed price. A tip is purely a thank-you on top, not a cost you're expected to cover.
What if I can't or don't want to tip?
That's completely fine. Tipping is discretionary and your agreed price never depends on it. A genuine thank-you, a good word to the company, or a positive review is also warmly appreciated.
