How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Car With a Driver in Ghana? (2026)

What a car with a driver really costs in Ghana in 2026 — daily rates by vehicle, what's included, fuel and overtime, and how it compares to self-drive.

Professional driver standing beside a hired car in Accra

Hiring a car with a driver is the most relaxed way to get around Ghana. You sit back, someone who knows every shortcut around Circle and the Tetteh Quarshie interchange does the driving, and you never once think about fuel gauges or security deposits. It is the default choice for business travellers, first-time visitors, wedding parties and anyone who would simply rather not drive in an unfamiliar city.

The obvious question is what it costs — and, just as importantly, what that price does and does not include. This guide lays out current 2026 rates for chauffeur-driven hire in Ghana, explains the extras that catch people out, and helps you decide whether a driver is worth it for your trip.

What a car with a driver costs in 2026

Chauffeur-driven rates are built from two things: the vehicle and the driver’s time. Bigger, more valuable vehicles cost more, and a full day costs more than a half day. Here is a realistic guide for a standard day in and around Accra, before fuel:

Vehicle With driver / day (city)
Toyota Corolla (saloon) GH₵ 900 – 1,200
Toyota RAV4 (SUV) GH₵ 1,300 – 1,500
Toyota Fortuner / Prado (4x4) GH₵ 1,500 – 1,700
Toyota Land Cruiser V8 (VIP) GH₵ 2,000 – 2,600
Mercedes-Benz E-Class (executive) GH₵ 2,200 – 2,800
14-seater Hiace (group) GH₵ 1,400 – 1,800

These are guide figures, not fixed quotes — the exact number depends on your dates, how long the days are, and how far you travel. For a precise price on your vehicle and schedule, see our chauffeur-driven hire page or send your dates.

What’s included — and what isn’t

This is where people get caught out, so it is worth being precise. A standard with-driver day rate almost always includes:

  • The vehicle, serviced, clean and air-conditioned.
  • A professional driver who knows the city and the routes.
  • A set number of hours — usually around 8 to 10 — within the Accra area.

It usually does not include:

  • Fuel. On most with-driver bookings fuel is billed to you, either as a separate line or built into a per-kilometre rate for longer trips. At late-2026 pump prices — around GH₵ 17.90 a litre for petrol and GH₵ 19.60 for diesel — fuel is a real part of the day’s cost, especially on long drives.
  • Overtime. Go past the agreed hours and the extra time is charged, typically at an hourly rate.
  • Trips outside the city. A run to Cape Coast, Kumasi or Aburi is priced by distance, not by the city day rate.
  • The driver’s overnight costs on multi-day upcountry trips, which are either added as a modest allowance or built into the quote.

None of this is hidden when you book with a reputable company — but you should ask for it in plain terms, which is exactly what our rental terms set out.

Why the daily rate is higher than self-drive

It can be a surprise that the same RAV4 costs GH₵ 1,200 a day to drive yourself but GH₵ 1,300–1,500 with a driver. The difference is the driver’s time, skill and local knowledge — and what that buys you:

  • No deposit. Self-drive requires a refundable security deposit; with a driver, the company carries the responsibility for the vehicle, so you don’t tie up funds.
  • No fuel-level worry. You never have to find a filling station or return the car full — the driver handles it.
  • No navigation or parking stress. Accra traffic is heavy and parking in the busy districts is tight. A driver drops you at the door and deals with both.
  • Flexibility. Change plans mid-day, add a stop, wait outside a meeting — the car and driver are yours for the day.

How the day actually works

A typical chauffeur-driven day is simple. You agree a start time and where the driver collects you — your hotel, home or the airport. The driver is there ahead of time, helps with bags, and takes you wherever your day leads: meetings, shopping, a wedding venue, a day trip. When you are done, they drop you back. If your day runs long, that is overtime; if it runs short, you still have the car for the hours you booked.

For events and celebrations, where timing and presentation matter, a dedicated driver is close to essential — see our wedding and event cars for how we handle those days specifically.

Multi-day and upcountry trips

For trips beyond Accra lasting more than a day — a few days exploring the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, a run up to Kumasi for a funeral or festival, a northern safari to Mole — chauffeur-driven hire is quoted as a package rather than a flat city day rate. The quote accounts for the distance, the number of days, fuel, and the driver’s meals and accommodation on the road.

This is genuinely the easiest way to see the country: you cover long distances without tiring yourself, you stop where you like, and a driver who knows the roads handles the night driving and the checkpoints. Our upcountry trips and road trips guides cover the main routes, and the Accra to Kumasi and Accra to Cape Coast write-ups give you a feel for distances and drive times.

Half day, full day and airport transfers

Not every day needs a full eight-to-ten-hour booking, and matching the booking to the need keeps the cost down.

A half day — typically up to four or five hours — suits a morning of meetings, an afternoon of shopping, or a single event. It costs less than a full day while still giving you a dedicated car and driver for the window you need.

A full day is the standard booking for sightseeing, a packed business schedule, or any day with several stops spread across the city. It’s where a driver earns its keep, because the car waits between every stop rather than you hailing a new ride each time.

An airport transfer is priced differently again — a fixed, one-way price for the run between Kotoka and your address, rather than an hourly day rate. If you’re arriving or departing, that’s usually the better-value way to book that leg; our Kotoka airport pickup guide sets out the transfer prices. Many visitors combine an airport transfer on arrival with full days during their stay.

How to keep the cost down

A car with a driver is a premium service, but a few sensible choices make it noticeably more affordable:

  • Book the right vehicle, not the biggest. A RAV4 costs far less than a Land Cruiser V8 and does the same job for most trips. Only pay for a luxury 4x4 when you genuinely need the capability or the presence.
  • Match the hours to the day. Don’t book a full day for a half-day need, and tell us upfront if you expect a late finish so it’s priced in rather than racking up overtime.
  • Book multiple days together. As with self-drive, longer bookings bring the daily rate down — a three-day or weekly arrangement is better value than three separate days.
  • Plan your stops geographically. A day that zig-zags across Accra burns fuel and hours; grouping stops by area keeps both down.
  • Agree fuel upfront. Know whether fuel is a separate line or built into a per-kilometre rate, so there are no surprises on a long day.

A good company will help you right-size the booking rather than over-sell — it’s how repeat business is earned.

Etiquette: tipping and the driver’s day

Visitors often ask how to treat their driver, and the answer is simply: as the skilled professional they are. A few norms:

  • Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. If your driver has given good service over a day or a trip, a tip is a kind gesture; there’s no fixed expectation.
  • The driver’s breaks. On a full day, your driver needs time to eat and rest. On long or multi-day trips, their meals and overnight accommodation are either included in the quote or covered by a modest allowance — confirmed in advance.
  • Communication. Share your plan for the day so the driver can route efficiently and be in position when you need them. A quick message if plans change keeps the day smooth.

Treating the arrangement as a partnership — clear communication, reasonable hours, a little appreciation — gets you the best of a service that’s already built around your comfort.

Groups, events and special occasions

A driver comes into its own for anything involving a group or an occasion. For a wedding, a dedicated car and driver mean the couple and party arrive on time and relaxed, with no one worrying about parking or directions — see our wedding and event cars. For a group outing, a 14-seater with a driver keeps everyone together and turns the travel itself into part of the day. For business delegations and conferences, a driver on call means your team moves on schedule without anyone losing hours to logistics.

In every one of these cases, the small premium over self-drive buys something self-drive can’t: the freedom for everyone, including whoever would otherwise be driving, to be fully present.

Is a driver worth it for your trip?

A car with a driver is worth the extra if any of these fit you: it is your first time in Accra and the traffic is unfamiliar; you are here on business and your hours are better spent working than parking; you are attending an event where you want to arrive relaxed; or you simply prefer to be driven. If you are a confident driver staying a week or more and independence matters, self-drive will cost you less.

Plenty of visitors do both — a driver for the first day or two and for big occasions, self-drive for the rest. There is no wrong choice, only the one that suits your confidence and your schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a car with a driver in Ghana?

As a 2026 guide, a car with a driver in Accra costs from about GH₵ 900–1,200 a day for a saloon, GH₵ 1,300–1,700 for an SUV like a RAV4 or Fortuner, and GH₵ 2,000 or more for a luxury Land Cruiser or executive Mercedes. Those rates cover the car and driver for a standard city day; fuel, trips outside the city and late finishes are charged on top.

Is a driver included in the car rental price in Ghana?

Not automatically. "Car with a driver" (also called chauffeur-driven hire) is a separate service from self-drive, and it is priced higher because it includes a professional driver. When you compare quotes, always check whether the rate is self-drive or with-driver — they are very different numbers for the same vehicle.

Do I need to pay for the driver's meals and accommodation?

For day hire within Accra, no. For multi-day trips upcountry — to Kumasi, Tamale or the coast — where the driver stays overnight, you typically cover a modest allowance for the driver's meals and lodging, or the rate is quoted to include it. Always confirm this before a long trip so it is agreed in advance.

Is hiring a driver cheaper than renting and driving yourself?

For a confident driver staying several days, self-drive is cheaper because you are not paying for a driver's time. A driver costs more per day but removes the deposit, the fuel-level risk and the stress of Accra traffic. Many visitors treat the extra as worth it for the first days or for business trips, then switch to self-drive once they know the roads.

How many hours does a day with a driver cover?

A standard day with a driver usually covers around 8 to 10 hours within the city. Beyond that, overtime applies, and trips outside the city are priced by distance rather than by the hour. If you expect long days or late nights, say so when you book so the rate reflects it.
