A funeral in Ghana is rarely one car and one day. Here is how to arrange transport that carries the family with dignity — to the hometown and back — without the last-minute scramble.

When a family loses someone in Ghana, the grief comes first — but close behind it comes logistics. A funeral here is almost never a single afternoon. It is a weekend, often several days, that moves the family from the house to the church or mosque, to the funeral grounds, and very frequently from Accra all the way to a hometown that may be four or five hours away. Everyone who matters is expected to be there, on time, and seen to arrive together. Getting them there is its own quiet responsibility, and it usually lands on one or two people in the family while everyone else is mourning.
This guide is for that person. It lays out how funeral car hire actually works in Ghana in 2026 — how many vehicles a typical funeral needs, what each costs across the weekend, how transport to the hometown is priced, and the handful of decisions that keep the day calm instead of chaotic.
Renting for a holiday and renting for a funeral are not the same job. A funeral booking has three features a normal rental does not. First, it is a convoy, not a car — the family moves as a group and the vehicles need to leave together, stay together, and wait together at each stop. Second, it is tied to a date that cannot move; a late bus on a holiday is an inconvenience, but a late bus on a burial morning is a wound. Third, it carries elders and grieving relatives who need clean, air-conditioned vehicles and patient drivers, not whatever happened to be free.

Sort the mourning party into three circles, because each rides differently.
A common setup for a mid-size family funeral from Accra: one saloon or SUV for the inner circle, one 14-seater for the wider family, and a second bus if the church is coming in force. Count seats honestly before you book — adding a bus the night before a burial is exactly the stress you are trying to avoid.
Funeral vehicles are almost always hired with a driver. The drivers who do this work understand the pace of a funeral — the waiting, the slow procession, the dignity of it. Current guide rates per day in Accra, driver included:
| Vehicle | Best for | Guide rate / day (with driver) |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla (saloon) | Inner-circle family | GH₵ 900 |
| Toyota RAV4 (SUV) | Elders, rough roads | GH₵ 1,300 |
| Toyota Fortuner (7-seat 4x4) | Larger inner circle, upcountry | GH₵ 1,500 |
| Land Cruiser Prado / V8 | Lead vehicle, VIP mourners | GH₵ 1,600 – 2,200 |
| 14-seater minibus | Wider family party | GH₵ 1,600 |
| 30-seater Coaster | Church, association, large family | GH₵ 2,200 |
Because most funerals run two to three days — a wake, the burial, and the thanksgiving service — the real cost is the daily rate across the days the vehicles are held, plus fuel and any out-of-town charge. Tell us the full programme and let us quote one all-in figure for the whole weekend. See the full fleet on our rates page.
Most funerals we cover are not in Accra. They are in Kumasi, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Ho, Tamale, or a village beyond. An upcountry funeral journey is priced as a return out-of-town trip and includes four things beyond the base rate: the extra distance and wear, fuel for the full round trip, the driver’s lodging, and the driver’s meals. A reputable operator rolls all of that into one figure quoted before you leave. Our road guides for Accra to Kumasi and Accra to Cape Coast give a sense of the distances involved.
Send the dates, where it’s being held and how many are travelling. We size the convoy and send one confirmed, all-in price the same day. No payment on the website.
A funeral runs to a rhythm, and the transport moves with it.
Because the vehicles are on standby for much of Saturday, funeral drivers are hired for the day, not the trip — you are paying for their presence and patience, not just the kilometres.
There is no room for “the car didn’t show” at a funeral. Confirm in writing: exact vehicles and one all-in total; experienced drivers who know funerals and the route; a backup plan if a vehicle has trouble; and a real person who answers on the day itself, not only when you book. Our guides on choosing a car rental company and avoiding scams cover the warning signs.
Funeral bookings are secured with a deposit that holds the vehicles for your date, with the balance before or on the first day. We take Mobile Money, bank transfer or cash, and set out every amount in the written quote. A verbal “I’ll take it” does not hold a bus when another family calls an hour later with cash in hand.
If you are arranging transport now, send us the funeral dates, where it is being held, and roughly how many are travelling. We come back the same day with one confirmed, all-in price. Our wish for your family is a day where the transport is the one thing nobody has to worry about.
Prices are guide rates with a driver, in and around Accra, reviewed October 2026. Out-of-town and multi-day funerals are quoted as one confirmed figure for your route, vehicles and dates.
