East of Accra, past Ada, the coast narrows to a dramatic strip of land between the Atlantic and the vast Keta Lagoon — and on it sits Keta, one of the most atmospheric and historic towns on Ghana’s eastern seaboard. With its old fort, its lagoon birdlife, its fishing culture and the wide skies of the Volta coast, it’s a rewarding and under-visited destination, easily reached by car.
The route and distance
Accra to Keta is roughly 180 kilometres, heading east along the coast through Ada and Sogakope, then out onto the sandbar toward Keta. The roads are mostly good, with the striking final stretch running between the lagoon and the sea.

How long it takes
Allow about three to three-and-a-half hours from Accra. It works as a long day trip, but a relaxed overnight lets you take in the lagoon, the fort and the coast without rushing.
What’s in Keta
Fort Prinzenstein — a historic coastal fort, partly claimed by the sea.
Keta Lagoon — a vast lagoon rich in birdlife, part of a Ramsar wetland.
Anloga and Cape St Paul — the lighthouse point and the shallots-farming heartland nearby.
The sandbar setting — sea on one side, lagoon on the other.
The right car
A saloon handles the drive comfortably; a family might prefer an SUV. Many take a driver to enjoy the scenery along the coast and causeway. We quote it as a return out-of-town trip. Our Ada guide covers the stretch of coast on the way.
