Where the Volta River finally meets the Atlantic, Ada Foah has become Accra’s favourite weekend escape. Here is how to drive there and make the most of a couple of days by the water.

Ask anyone in Accra where they go to switch off for a weekend, and Ada Foah comes up again and again. It sits about two hours east of the city at the mouth of the Volta River, the point where the great river finally spills into the Atlantic across a long sandbar. The result is a rare landscape — river on one side, ocean on the other, beaches and islands in between — dotted with resorts and beach camps that range from rustic to genuinely lovely. It has become the capital’s go-to short break, and a car makes it effortless.
Here is how to do Ada by road: the route, what to do once you are there, and which vehicle suits the trip.
Ada works because it delivers a proper change of scene without a long haul. Two hours from the Accra traffic and you are watching the river meet the sea; close enough to leave after work on Friday, far enough to feel away from it all. The spread of places to stay — from laid-back beach camps to comfortable resorts with pools — means it suits a backpacker weekend and a family treat equally, and the water activities give you more to do than simply lie on the sand.

Accra to Ada Foah is roughly 110 kilometres, heading east out of the city along the coastal road toward the Volta estuary, with the drive taking about two to two-and-a-half hours depending on traffic leaving Accra. The main road is good tarmac for most of the way. The thing to know is that the final approach to some of the riverside and beach resorts can be on rougher, sandy tracks — worth checking where exactly you are staying, as it affects whether a saloon will do or an SUV is the smarter choice.
Because the good spots are spread along the river and shore, having your own vehicle lets you move between them and set your own pace rather than being tied to one resort or a trotro timetable.

For the main road, a saloon like a Corolla is perfectly comfortable. But if your resort is down one of the sandier tracks, or you are a family with luggage and beach kit, an SUV such as a RAV4 adds clearance and space. For a group heading down together, a 14-seater with a driver keeps everyone in one vehicle. On the self-drive question: the route is easy enough to drive yourself, but plenty of people prefer a driver for a weekend away so the drive is part of the relaxation. Guide rates: a saloon around GH₵ 800 self-drive or GH₵ 900 with a driver, before fuel and the out-of-town charge.
An Ada weekend is quoted as a return out-of-town trip — distance, fuel and, if you take a driver, the driver’s time, in one figure agreed before you set off. Send us your dates, your group size, where you’re staying, and whether you want a driver or self-drive, and we will match the right car and confirm one price. No payment on the website.
