The Volta Region is Ghana’s green corner — waterfalls, mountains and lakeside quiet, a few hours east of Accra. Here is how to drive there, what to see, and the right car for the roads.

Ask Ghanaians where to go when they want green hills, cool air and waterfalls, and most will point east to the Volta Region. It is a different landscape from the coast and the dry north — rolling, forested, mountainous in places — and it sits close enough to Accra for a long weekend but far enough to feel like a proper escape. Ho, the regional capital, is the usual base, with the real highlights scattered in the hills around Hohoe further north.
This guide covers the drive from Accra: the route and distance, how long it realistically takes, what is worth seeing once you are there, and which vehicle makes the trip comfortable.
Accra to Ho is roughly 165 kilometres, heading east out of the capital and across the lower Volta. The road is mostly good tarmac, and for much of the way it is an easy, scenic drive that gets greener and hillier as you approach the region. Ho itself is a relaxed town set against the hills — a sensible base for exploring, with the mountain and waterfall sites within reach for day trips from there.

Allow about three hours from Accra to Ho in normal conditions, a little more if you hit traffic leaving the city or stop along the way. The sites beyond Ho add driving time: Hohoe and Wli are a further hour or so north of Ho, and the mountain villages involve slower, winding roads. If your plan includes Wli Falls or Amedzofe, think of it as a two- or three-day trip rather than a single long day, so you are not rushing the best parts.
The region packs an unusual amount of natural beauty into a few hours’ radius:
Because these are spread out and often up winding roads, a car genuinely transforms the trip. Trying to string them together by trotro and shared taxi eats the days you came to enjoy.

For Ho itself and the main roads, a saloon is perfectly comfortable. But if your plan includes the hillier routes toward Hohoe, Amedzofe and the waterfall villages, an SUV like a RAV4 or Fortuner gives you clearance and an easier ride on the rougher stretches. For a group, a 14-seater with a driver keeps everyone together.
Whether to self-drive or hire a driver comes down to confidence and preference. The Volta roads are manageable, so experienced drivers often self-drive for the freedom. But if you would rather watch the scenery, take photos and not think about directions on unfamiliar mountain roads, a driver who knows the region is a pleasure. Guide rates: a saloon around GH₵ 800 self-drive, an SUV around GH₵ 1,200, with a driver adding roughly GH₵ 100–300 a day, before fuel and the out-of-town charge.
A trip like this is best quoted as a return out-of-town journey, with the distance, fuel and — if you take a driver — the driver’s overnight lodging and meals rolled into one figure. Tell us your dates, your group size, which sites you want to reach, and whether you want to drive yourself. We will match the right vehicle and send one confirmed price, with no payment on the website.
