Where the Volta meets the sea, Ada is Accra’s favourite water escape. Here’s how to hire a car or driver for the estuary and its resorts, and what to know about the roads.

Ada — and specifically Ada Foah, where the great Volta River finally spills into the Atlantic across a long sandbar — has become the capital’s go-to weekend escape. River on one side, ocean on the other, a string of resorts and beach camps in between, and boat trips out to the estuary and its islands. It is close enough to Accra for an easy run and relaxed enough to feel properly away. A hire car makes the trip simple and lets you move between the water and the resorts on your own schedule.
Ada’s appeal is spread along the river and shore, and the resorts and launch points are scattered rather than clustered. With your own vehicle you reach the one you want directly, move between beach and boat as you please, and avoid the hassle of shared transport for the last stretch. For a weekend built around relaxing, not logistics, a car is exactly what you want.

Our Accra to Ada Foah guide covers the trip in full.
The main road to Ada is good tarmac, so a saloon handles the journey fine. The thing to know is that the final approach to some riverside and beach resorts can be rough, sandy track — so if your resort is down one of those, an SUV is the wiser choice. Tell us where you’re staying and we’ll recommend the right vehicle.
Guide rates: a saloon around GH₵ 800 self-drive or GH₵ 900 with a driver, an SUV around GH₵ 1,200–1,300, before fuel and any out-of-town charge; full list on our rates page. We can arrange the car from Accra for the trip, or deliver it to you, and quote the weekend as one return figure.
Tell us your dates, group size and where you’re staying. We’ll match the right vehicle and confirm one clear price for the weekend.
