Cool, green and under two hours from Accra, Koforidua is the gateway to the Eastern Region’s hills, waterfalls and gardens. Here’s how to drive there and what to build around it.

Climb north out of Accra into the hills and the air changes — cooler, fresher, greener. Koforidua, affectionately known as “Kof-town,” is the relaxed capital of the Eastern Region and the natural base for one of Ghana’s loveliest corners: a landscape of hills, waterfalls, botanical gardens and the great Volta lake, all within easy reach. It is close enough to Accra for a day trip and pleasant enough to make a weekend of, and a car is what ties the scattered highlights together.
Koforidua itself is an easygoing regional town with a famous market and a comfortable, unhurried pace — a pleasant change from the coast. But its real value is as a hub: from here the Eastern Region’s best bits are all a short drive away, and the cooler hill climate makes the whole area a refreshing contrast to humid Accra. For a visitor wanting hills, greenery and a few natural sights without a long haul, it is ideal.

Accra to Koforidua is roughly 85 kilometres, a drive of about one-and-a-half to two hours heading north into the hills. The main road is good and the climb into greener country is a pleasant drive in itself. It is an easy run — comfortably a day trip, though the area rewards an overnight if you want to see more than one of the nearby sights.
This is where a car really pays off, because Koforidua’s best outings are all a short drive away:
The roads around Koforidua are good, so a saloon is perfectly comfortable; a family touring several sights might prefer an SUV. Whether to self-drive or take a driver is down to preference — the roads are easy enough to drive yourself, but a driver lets you enjoy the hill scenery and hop between sights without navigating.
