The northern Volta Region holds some of Ghana’s most spectacular scenery, and its crown jewel is Wli Waterfalls — the tallest in West Africa, cascading down a forested cliff and reached by a gentle, beautiful walk through the trees. The gateway is Hohoe, and the surrounding hills hide Ghana’s highest peak and cool mountain villages. It’s a rewarding drive from Accra, through green, changing country.

The route and distance

Accra to Hohoe is roughly 230 kilometres, heading east and north through the Volta Region, with the landscape growing greener and hillier as you go. Wli is a short further drive beyond Hohoe toward the Togo border. The roads are mostly good, with the final approaches to the falls and mountain villages more winding.

How long it takes

Allow about four hours to Hohoe in normal conditions, plus time for the final leg to Wli and any hill villages. For Wli and Mount Afadja together, plan a two- or three-day trip rather than one long day, basing in or around Hohoe; see our Hohoe hire guide.

Wli Falls and the hills

  • Wli Waterfalls — the tallest in West Africa; the lower falls are a gentle walk, the upper falls a serious climb.
  • Mount Afadja (Afadjato) — Ghana’s highest peak, a steep but doable hike.
  • Amedzofe — a cool mountain village with viewpoints and a waterfall.
  • Tafi Atome — a community monkey sanctuary nearby.

The right car

A saloon manages the main roads, but for the hillier routes an SUV is more comfortable. Many take a driver to enjoy the scenery on the winding roads. We quote the trip as a return out-of-town journey. Our Accra to Ho guide covers the wider Volta.
