Does it matter whether your hire car runs on petrol or diesel in Ghana? A little — mostly for long trips and big vehicles. Here’s a clear, practical comparison for renters.

When you hire a car in Ghana, you pay for the fuel on top of the rental rate — so the question of petrol versus diesel is really a question about running cost. It’s not something most renters need to agonise over, but on long trips and in bigger vehicles it can make a real difference to your total spend. Here’s a clear, practical look at how the two compare and when each makes sense.
Because fuel is your cost, not the rental’s, the efficiency of the car affects your wallet directly — sometimes as much as the daily rate itself on a long drive. The two variables are the price per litre (diesel is a bit dearer) and how far the car goes on a litre (which depends on the vehicle and how you drive it). Petrol and diesel sit differently on both, which is what the choice comes down to.

In late 2026, pump prices in Ghana run roughly GH₵ 17.90 a litre for petrol and GH₵ 19.60 for diesel — so diesel is a little more expensive per litre. (Prices move with the market, so treat these as a guide; our cost guide keeps the current figures.) The higher diesel price is offset, in the right vehicle, by better efficiency — which is where the real comparison lies.
Petrol is the natural choice for small and economy cars — the Yaris, the Corolla — which are what most people hire for city driving and shorter trips. These cars are frugal on petrol, cheaper to fill, and ideal for Accra errands and light use. If you’re renting a small car for getting around town, it’ll almost certainly be petrol, and that’s exactly right.
Diesel comes into its own in bigger, heavier vehicles and on long distances. Many 4x4s, pickups and buses — the Hilux, Land Cruisers, minibuses — are diesel, because diesel engines are efficient and strong under load, which is what you want for upcountry trips, carrying weight, and long hauls. On a long drive in a big vehicle, diesel’s efficiency can outweigh its higher price per litre. So for heavy-duty and long-distance use, diesel is usually the sensible fuel — and typically what those vehicles run on anyway.
Tell us where and how far you’re driving. We’ll match the right vehicle — and the fuel type will suit the job.
Here’s the reassuring part: for most renters, you don’t need to choose the fuel — you choose the car for your trip, and the fuel type follows naturally. A small car for the city will be petrol; a 4x4 or bus for upcountry will likely be diesel; both will be the right tool for the job. Tell us your trip — where, how far, how many — and we’ll match the right vehicle, with the fuel type taking care of itself. No payment is taken on the website.
