Every Easter, the Kwahu plateau becomes the biggest party in Ghana. Here is how to get your group there and back comfortably — and why the vehicles are booked weeks in advance.

If you have never spent Easter on the Kwahu plateau, it is hard to describe the scale of it. For four days over the Easter weekend, towns that are quiet the rest of the year — Nkawkaw at the foot of the mountain, Mpraeso, Abetifi, Obo, Atibie — fill with tens of thousands of people. Street parties, concerts, church services, family reunions and, floating above all of it, paragliders launching off the escarpment. It has become the single biggest domestic travel event in Ghana, and getting there is half the challenge.
This guide covers the practical side the festival pages skip: how to get your group from Accra to Kwahu, what the roads are actually like, which vehicle makes sense, and why the smart move is to book your transport weeks before the weekend rather than days.
Kwahu Easter is less a single event than a whole region throwing its doors open. The Kwahu people, many of whom live and work in Accra and Kumasi the rest of the year, return home for Easter in enormous numbers, and the diaspora and tourists come with them. The result is four days of festivities spread across the plateau towns, anchored by the paragliding festival that has run here for years and put Kwahu on the national map. For a visitor, it is one of the best windows in the calendar to see Ghanaian celebration at full volume.

The drive from Accra to Kwahu is roughly three hours in normal conditions, running north through the Eastern Region to Nkawkaw, the town at the base of the mountain. From Nkawkaw the road climbs the escarpment in a series of tight, steep bends up to the plateau towns. It is a genuinely beautiful drive — and a demanding one for a tired driver in an unfamiliar car.
Two things change the timing. First, Easter traffic: the main roads out of Accra are heavy on Good Friday morning, so leaving early (or on Thursday evening) is worth it. Second, the climb itself slows everyone down, and in the festival crush the plateau towns can be bumper to bumper. Build in extra time and do not plan to arrive in the dark if you can help it.
The mountain roads reward ground clearance and a comfortable ride, so the vehicle choice matters more here than on a flat city trip.
For Kwahu specifically we usually recommend hiring with a driver, even if you would normally self-drive. A driver who has done the escarpment in festival traffic is worth far more than the daily difference, and it frees you to actually enjoy the weekend. Guide rates: an SUV around GH₵ 1,300 a day, a 14-seater around GH₵ 1,600 and a 30-seater around GH₵ 2,200, before fuel and the out-of-town charge. See all options on our rates page.
Tell us your group size and dates. We’ll match the right vehicle, assign a driver who knows the plateau, and send one confirmed price. Kwahu transport goes fast.
The headline attraction is the Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival, held at the Odweanoma mountain site near Atibie. Experienced pilots take visitors up on tandem flights over the escarpment — one of the few places in West Africa you can do it — and the launch area draws big crowds across the weekend. If flying is on your list, treat the logistics seriously: the site gets busy, parking is limited, and you will want a driver who can drop your group near the entrance and collect you afterwards rather than circling for a space. Agree those pickup points with your driver the night before.
Here is the part people learn the hard way: around Easter, Kwahu transport genuinely sells out. Every car rental company in Accra is fielding the same requests, buses go first, and good drivers are spoken for well ahead of the weekend. If you know you are going, reserve your vehicle two to three weeks out. A deposit holds it; a plan to “sort it out nearer the time” often ends with paying over the odds for whatever is left, or not finding a bus at all.
To book, send us your dates, your group size, and whether you want self-drive or a driver. We will recommend the right vehicle for the mountain roads and confirm one all-in price in cedis or your home currency — with no payment taken on the website.
Rates are guide figures reviewed October 2026 and quoted as a return out-of-town trip for the Easter period. Festival details and the paragliding programme are set by the organisers; confirm dates and site arrangements with them before you travel.
