Elmina is one of the most atmospheric and historically significant places on Ghana’s coast — a working fishing town where brightly painted boats crowd the lagoon beneath the white walls of Elmina Castle, the oldest surviving European-built structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Just along the coast from Cape Coast and within reach of the Kakum rainforest, it’s a powerful and rewarding trip from Accra, and a car ties the region’s sights together.
The route and distance
Accra to Elmina is roughly 155 kilometres, following the coastal road west through Winneba and past Cape Coast, to which Elmina is a near neighbour. The road is mostly good tarmac and the drive is a pleasant one along the coast.

How long it takes
Allow about three hours from Accra in normal conditions, a little more with traffic leaving the city or stops along the way. It works as a long day trip, but the history here — and nearby Cape Coast and Kakum — rewards an overnight so you’re not rushing the castles.
What to see in Elmina
Elmina Castle (St George’s) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a profoundly moving guided tour of the former slave-trade fortress.
The fishing harbour and Fort St Jago — the vivid lagoon of pirogues, overlooked by a hilltop fort.
Cape Coast Castle — the second great castle, 12 km east; see our Cape Coast guide.
Kakum National Park — the famous canopy walk, under an hour inland; our Kakum guide.
The right car
A saloon is comfortable for the coastal roads; a family might prefer an SUV. Many visitors take a driver so they can give the castles their full attention. We quote the trip as a return journey — distance, fuel and driver in one figure.
