Past Takoradi, Ghana’s coast turns quiet and beautiful — Busua, Butre and Dixcove, the country’s laid-back surf corner. Here is how to drive there and what to expect on the way.

Ghana’s best-known beaches sit around Cape Coast and Elmina, but keep driving west, past Takoradi, and the coast gets quieter, greener and — for many people — lovelier. This is Busua country: a small, friendly beach town that has become the heart of Ghana’s small surf scene, flanked by the lagoon village of Butre and the old fishing harbour of Dixcove. It is further from Accra than the usual coastal trips, and that distance is exactly what keeps it unhurried.
This guide covers the drive west: how far it really is, what the journey is like, what you will find when you arrive, and the right vehicle for a long coastal run.
Busua rewards the extra driving with a different pace. Where the Cape Coast beaches can be busy, Busua is laid-back and low-key — a long sweep of sand, gentle surf, a handful of guesthouses and beach bars, and the feeling of having found somewhere a little off the main trail. It is the place Accra folk and travellers go when they want the coast without the crowd, and the surrounding villages give you more to explore than a single beach.

Accra to Busua is roughly 245 kilometres, following the coastal road west through Cape Coast and on past Takoradi, then turning down to the coast. Allow about four-and-a-half to five hours with the usual stops. The road is mostly good, and it is a scenic drive, but it is a genuine haul — which is why Busua is a weekend-or-longer destination rather than a day trip. Many people break the journey at Cape Coast (see our Accra to Cape Coast guide) on the way down or back.
The three are close together, so a car lets you base yourself in Busua and dip into the others easily over a weekend.

On a drive this long, comfort matters more than on a quick hop. A comfortable saloon like the Corolla is fine, but for a family or anyone wanting more space and an easier ride over the distance, an SUV is worth it. For a group, a 14-seater with a driver spreads the cost and keeps everyone together. Given the length of the drive, a lot of people choose a driver for this one — nearly five hours each way is tiring to do yourself — though confident drivers happily self-drive. Guide rates: a saloon around GH₵ 800 self-drive or GH₵ 900 with a driver, an SUV around GH₵ 1,200–1,300, before fuel and the out-of-town charge.
A Busua trip is quoted as a return out-of-town journey, with the long distance, fuel and — if you take a driver — the driver’s overnight lodging and meals built into one figure. Tell us your dates, your group size, and whether you want a driver or to drive yourself, and we will match the right vehicle and confirm one price. No payment on the website.
