What to Expect From Your Driver in Ghana: Etiquette & Tipping

If you have never hired a car with a driver in Ghana before, your first day can feel like learning a new set of rules. Most of them are simple, and most of them come down to one thing: working well together. This guide sets out, honestly, what a CarRentalGH driver does and does not do, how we handle waiting and long days, and where tipping fits. Every hire from us includes a professional driver, so this is really about the relationship between you and the person at the wheel.

Who Your Driver Is, and What They Are Not

Every CarRentalGH hire comes with a professional driver. Our drivers are vetted before they take on clients, and they know the roads of Accra, Kasoa and the coast well. They know which junctions clog at rush hour, which detour is worth taking when a road is blocked, and how long a trip to Cape Coast really takes on a busy weekend rather than how long the map says it should take. That local knowledge is a large part of what you are paying for.

What they are not is a licensed tour guide, and we want to be plain about that. Ghana has official, licensed guides who are accredited to lead tours at heritage sites and attractions, and they carry the training and access that go with the role. Our drivers can point out places along the way, suggest a good spot for lunch, and share what they know about the area the way a well-travelled friend would. But they will not present themselves as your guide for a formal tour. If you want one, book the official guide at the site or through the official channel, and we will shape your route around that appointment.

What Your Driver Will Do for You

A driver's core job is to get you there safely and on the route you agreed. Beyond that, most of what they do is practical, and it helps to know the list so you can ask for it without feeling awkward:

  • Drive you between the places on your plan, following the route you agreed when you booked.
  • Wait for you during your stops, within the waiting arrangement you confirmed.
  • Help carry bags, shopping and luggage, especially at the airport and at hotel entrances.
  • Meet you at Kotoka International Airport, help with your bags to the car, and take you to your hotel or onward destination.

Think of them as the person who handles the road, so you can handle your day. If you have a specific need, say so at the start: a stop at a pharmacy or a bank, a longer pause for a meeting, or a route that avoids a particular area. Drivers can only plan well for what they know about, and a request made on the morning of the trip is much harder to fit in than one made the day before.

Sharing Your Plan and Staying in Touch

The single biggest thing you can do to make the day go well is to share your plan early. Send us your pick-up point, the stops you want to make, roughly when you want to leave each place, and where you need to be by evening. WhatsApp is the easiest route: +233 24 915 1503. If you prefer email, write to info@carrentalgh.com.

A plan does not need to be formal. A short list of messages in a WhatsApp thread, with the hotel name, a landmark for the pick-up, and the places you want to visit, is enough. Include the small details too: which hotel gate is easiest to reach, whether the car will be parked on a busy street, and whether anyone will be joining you later.

Once the day has started, keep the line open. If your plans change, tell your driver early rather than at the car door. A message at 11am that says the lunch will run an hour longer is easy to work with. A decision made at 4pm with a flight to catch is not.

Waiting Time, Punctuality and Long Days

Punctuality matters on both sides. We aim to be where we said we would be, and we ask you to be ready when the driver arrives, especially for airport runs and early starts. Ghana's roads can be unpredictable, particularly at peak times around central Accra and on busy weekend routes out towards the coast, so we build realistic travel times into a plan rather than best-case ones. If your plan depends on being somewhere at an exact minute, say so when you book and we will plan a little more generously around it.

Waiting is part of hiring a driver for a day. You may be in a meeting, browsing at Makola or another busy market, or enjoying a long lunch. Waiting in the car is the driver's working time, not free time, so the honest approach is to tell us in advance roughly how long you expect to be. Something like 'about forty-five minutes' or 'until around three' is far more useful than 'we will see'. We will agree how waiting is handled in your quote, so nothing comes as a surprise at the end of the day. Long waits that nobody warned the driver about are where most of the frustration starts, on both sides.

Full-day hire often means long days. From the early morning until the evening, a driver is working the whole time, even when the car is parked and everyone else is relaxing. Confirm your start time and the expected finish when you book, so you both know how long the day will be. If the plan stretches later than agreed, say so as early as you can. That way it can be settled calmly, before the driver is exhausted and you are rushing to the next place.

Tipping: Appreciated, Not Required

Tipping is not required. You do not have to tip to receive a professional service, and you should never feel pressured into it. That said, it is appreciated, and a small gesture of thanks is a common way of showing that good work was noticed. Here is how we would think about it, honestly.

  • If the day went well, with punctual pick-ups, careful driving and patience with your schedule, a tip at the end of the day is a fair way of saying thank you.
  • For a long day, a very early start, a late finish or extra help with heavy bags, it is reasonable to give a little more.
  • There is no fixed figure. Choose an amount that suits your budget and the work done. Cedis in cash, handed over at the end of the day, is the simplest approach.
  • If something went wrong, or the service did not match what you agreed, you are not obliged to tip. Tell us directly so we can put it right.

The quote we give you already covers the agreed service, including fuel and tolls on your route. A tip is separate from that and is entirely your own choice. Please do not think of it as the way to secure a basic service, because the basic service is what you have already paid for.

Respect Works Both Ways, and What Your Quote Covers

A good working relationship with a driver is built on respect in both directions. Be clear about what you need, keep to the time you agreed, and treat them as the professional they are. Drivers, for their part, should be courteous, honest about timing, and careful with your belongings and your schedule. A simple 'Medaase' (thank you) at the end of a stop, or a greeting when they pick you up in the morning, sets the tone for the whole day.

On the practical side, ask us to set out exactly what your quote covers before you travel. Fuel and road tolls on your agreed route are handled in the quote, so you know the cost before the day begins. Ask about anything that is unclear, such as extra hours, an additional stop, or a destination further away than you first thought.

Payment is simple. We do not take payment on the website. You can pay by MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo Mobile Money, by bank transfer, or in cash.

Frequently asked questions

Is the driver a tour guide?
No. Our drivers are professional and know the roads well, but they are not licensed tour guides and should not be presented to you as one. They can recommend places, tell you what they know about a neighbourhood, and plan a route that takes in what you want to see. For a formal guided tour, especially at heritage sites, book the official guide at the site or through the official channel. Tell us your plan and we will build the day around that guide's time slot, so you are not rushing from one appointment to the next.
Do I have to tip my driver, and how much?
No, tipping is not required. It is appreciated when the service has been good, and there is no fixed amount. Many clients give a modest sum in cedis at the end of the day, and a little more after a long day, a very early start or a lot of heavy luggage. If the service did not match what you agreed, you can choose not to tip, and please tell us what went wrong so we can fix it.
What hours do drivers work?
Hire is usually by the day, and the working day is agreed when you book. Share your planned start time and the time you expect to finish. Full days can be long, especially when you add a trip to the coast or a late airport arrival, so it is better to agree the hours early than to have the driver feel rushed or leave you wondering when the day will end. If your plan changes during the day, tell your driver as early as you can.
How long will my driver wait while I am out?
Short waits while you shop, eat or attend a meeting are a normal part of a day's hire. For longer waits, tell us in advance roughly how long you expect to be out. We will agree how waiting time is handled in your quote, so there are no surprises at the end of the day. Waiting in the car is the driver's working time, and a clear estimate such as 'about forty-five minutes' or 'back by three' makes the whole day easier for both of you.
Who pays for fuel and road tolls?
Fuel and road tolls are handled in your quote. You know what the trip will cost before the day starts, and you do not need to hand over extra money for petrol or tolls on the route you agreed. If you add stops or change the route during the day, let us know, because that can change the quote. Ask us to write out what the quote covers for your specific trip, especially for a longer journey to Cape Coast or along the coast.
How do I book?
Book by WhatsApp on +233 24 915 1503, or by email at info@carrentalgh.com. Tell us the vehicle you want (a Corolla from GH₵800 a day, a RAV4 at GH₵1,200, a Prado with driver at GH₵1,600, or a 30-seat Coaster at GH₵2,200), along with your pick-up point and your plan for the day. Kotoka airport transfers start from GH₵450. We do not take payment on the website. You can pay by MTN, Telecel or AirtelTigo Mobile Money, by bank transfer, or in cash.
