Private Car With a Driver vs Joining a Group Tour in Ghana: Which Is Right for You?

From Accra to Cape Coast and Kasoa to the airport, there is more than one good way to see Ghana. The right choice depends on who you are travelling with and how you like your days to feel.

Two Good Ways to See Ghana

If you are spending a few days in Accra, or planning a trip out along the coast to Kasoa, Cape Coast and Elmina, you will soon face the same question: should you join a group tour, or hire a private car with a driver? Both are good choices. They suit different people, budgets and ways of travelling, and the honest answer depends on who is coming with you and how you like your days to feel.

A group tour hands you a plan. You turn up at the agreed time, share the vehicle with other travellers, follow a guide through the stops, and usually pay a price that was fixed in advance. For many visitors, especially those travelling alone or seeing Ghana for the first time, that structure is the whole appeal.

A private car with a driver works differently. The plan becomes a starting point rather than a fixed rule. You choose the places, the order and the pace, and you can change your mind as the day goes on. Below is what each option really gives you, where each one falls short, and when a private car is the better value.

Arriving in Accra? Sort your ride first.

Pre-book a car with a driver or a Kotoka airport pickup — fixed price, agreed before you land.

What a Group Tour Gives You

Group tours have real strengths, and it would be unfair to pretend otherwise. The biggest is company. If you are on your own, a group gives you people to share a meal with, someone to ask about what you are seeing, and fellow travellers to laugh with when the traffic goes wrong. A good guide also brings context and history that are easy to miss when you are looking around alone.

The second advantage is predictability. The price is set, the route is set, and you do not have to make decisions about timing, where to stop for lunch or how long to spend at each place. For a first visit, or for someone who would rather not plan, that simplicity is valuable.

The trade-offs come from that same structure:

  • Fixed pace. The group moves when the group moves. If you want an extra hour at a castle or a slow lunch by the sea, you will usually have to let it go.
  • Shared time. Stops are chosen for the whole party, so the places you care about most may get the shortest visit.
  • Set pick-up and drop-off. Check whether the meeting point and times suit where you are staying or where you land at Kotoka International Airport.
  • Less privacy. You share the vehicle and the day with strangers. That is wonderful for some people and tiring for others.

What a Private Car With a Driver Gives You

A private car with a driver is built around your party. You set the start time, which can be early if you want to beat the midday heat, or later if you would rather take a slow breakfast first. Pick-up and drop-off are door to door, from your hotel, your home or Kotoka International Airport, so you are not carrying bags to a meeting point or waiting for a head count.

The biggest advantage is flexibility. Want to stop at a market you spotted from the road, spend longer on the castle walls, or skip a planned site because you are tired? You can say so, and the driver can plan the rest of the day around it. Privacy is the second gift. The car is yours, the conversation is yours, and you can be quiet when you want to be.

It is not a perfect match for everyone. The honest downsides are:

  • You do more of the planning. You will need to agree on the route, the timings and the places you want to see, although we are happy to help you shape the day.
  • Solo travel can feel quiet. There is no group around you. The driver knows the roads and the routes, but is there to get you there safely, not to be your travel companion.
  • Traffic is real. Accra's roads can slow a trip across town or out to the coast, so allow extra time and ask your driver the best hour to leave.

Our drivers know the routes well, from which roads run best at which times to where to stop for a proper Ghanaian lunch. But they are not licensed tour guides. At heritage sites, the official guides and caretakers give the tours, and that is where much of the story comes from. Your driver will help you make the most of the day around those visits, not replace the guide inside.

Comparing the Cost: When a Private Car Wins

Price is where most people begin, and it is where comparisons go wrong if you look only at the headline. A group tour is usually priced per seat, which can look attractive on paper. A private car is priced per vehicle per day, so the cost per person falls as your party grows. Our starting rates are a RAV4 from GH₵1,200 a day and a Prado with driver from GH₵1,600 a day. Final prices depend on the vehicle, number of days and route, so ask for a written quote.

For a couple or a family of four, the arithmetic often favours a private car. At the starting rate, a RAV4 shared by four people works out at about GH₵300 each per day, and a Prado shared by four at about GH₵400 each. Two people sharing a RAV4 pay about GH₵600 each per day. Remember too that the car stays with you for the whole day, not just between the set stops.

The 30-seat Coaster, from GH₵2,200 a day, is a different proposition. It is built for larger groups such as a company outing, a church party or a school trip. If all 30 seats are filled, the starting rate is around GH₵73 each per day, which is good value, but only if you genuinely have a full bus of people who want to travel together.

So a rough rule of thumb: for two to four people who want the same trip, a private car is often the better value. For a single traveller, the sums are harder to call. A group tour may well be the better buy, especially if company matters to you more than control. Compare full totals, including what each option covers, before you decide.

Flexibility, Privacy and Heritage Trips

Some trips suit a private car far better than a group, and heritage trips are the clearest example. Visiting Cape Coast Castle or Elmina Castle can be emotionally heavy, and people respond in very different ways. Some want to ask every question on the tour; others need to stand quietly in a courtyard, sit on a bench and let it sink in. A private car lets you decide what kind of day you are having, and change it if your mood shifts.

Many visitors also have a day that is partly for themselves. You might be visiting family in Kasoa, or you want an hour in Makola Market, time at the Black Star Gate in Accra, or a swim on the coast. With a car and driver, those stops become part of the plan rather than an awkward request to a group that is trying to keep to time.

Privacy matters more than people expect. In a private car, conversations stay between you, you can take photos without waiting for everyone to get back on board, and you are not sharing a lunch table with strangers you did not choose. For families, that can make the whole trip easier, because you can stop when a child needs a break and keep to your own rhythm.

Flexibility also works in the other direction. If the first site is busier than you expected, or the traffic is slow, you can adjust the afternoon instead of pressing on to a schedule that no longer fits. That kind of quiet adjustment is hard to make when you are one of a large group.

Who Should Choose Which, and How It Works With Us

Choose a group tour if you are travelling alone and want company, a guide who leads the story, and a predictable day at a fixed price. It is also a good fit if you enjoy meeting other visitors and are happy to follow the plan.

Choose a private car with a driver if you are two to four people, if you want to set your own timing, or if privacy, flexibility and a slower, more reflective visit matter to you. It also suits families, friends who want to split the day between sightseeing and rest, and business travellers who need to fit meetings around their sightseeing.

Here is how it works with CarRentalGH. Every hire includes a professional driver, so there is always someone who knows the roads and the timing, and you do not have to navigate the traffic yourself. Send us your dates, pick-up point, the places you want to visit and the number of passengers, by WhatsApp or email, and we will come back with a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private car with a driver more expensive than a group tour?
It can cost more per day, but not always per person. At our starting rate, a RAV4 shared by four people works out at about GH₵300 each per day. Compare full totals and ask us for a written quote that shows exactly what is included.
Is the driver also a licensed tour guide?
No. Our drivers know the routes, the traffic and good places to stop, and they will help shape your day, but they are not licensed tour guides. At heritage sites such as Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, the official guides or caretakers give the tours, so ask for one when you arrive.
Can I change the plan on the day?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons people choose a private car. Want a longer stop, a different lunch spot or an earlier finish? Tell your driver, who will check how it affects the timing with you, and larger changes such as adding a new town may need a fresh quote.
Is a private car good for families and heritage trips?
Very often, yes. Families can set the pace around children, take breaks when they are needed and keep the day to their own plan. On heritage trips, the slower and more personal pace gives you room to reflect, and you can fit lunch and rest around the visit.
Is it a good option for solo travellers?
It can be, but it depends on what you want from the day. A group tour gives you built-in company and a guide who leads the story, which many solo travellers enjoy. A private car gives you quiet and full control, so it suits solo travellers who want to set their own pace.
