Travelling with children in Ghana
Ghana is a warm and welcoming country for families, with plenty to see between the capital and the coast. The main challenge is often the journey itself. Roads can be busy, distances can be longer than they look on a map, and children used to home routines may need more breaks than you planned.
A little preparation goes a long way. Plan your driving for daylight hours where you can, keep water, snacks, wipes and any medicines within easy reach, and build rest stops into the day. Pack a few favourite toys and books so the journey feels like part of the holiday rather than something to get through.
Most of all, choose transport that gives everyone space. A cramped car turns a short trip into a long one. A roomy vehicle with a professional driver lets parents relax and lets the children stretch out, nap or watch the scenery go by.

Choosing a roomy vehicle
The right vehicle depends on how many people are travelling and how much luggage you are bringing. Count the buggies, car seats, cool boxes and the bags you will pick up along the way.
For a small family of three or four with everyday luggage, our Toyota RAV4 at GH₵1,200 per day offers a comfortable ride and enough space for suitcases. If you want a larger SUV, the Toyota Prado with driver at GH₵1,600 gives extra room for longer journeys across the country.
For bigger groups, the 14-seater van at GH₵1,600 works well for extended families and friends travelling together. Travelling with grandparents, a large group or a school party? The 30-seat Coaster at GH₵2,200 keeps everyone together. If you need seven seats, a 7-seater Toyota Sienna is available on request.
Tip: measure your luggage and buggy before you choose. If you are in doubt, go one size up. The extra space is worth having on a hot day.

Child seats and safety
Child seats are available on request when you book, so you do not need to carry a seat through the airport. Tell us the age and weight of each child when you enquire, so we can arrange a seat that suits them. Please confirm the arrangement before you travel.
A few principles apply wherever you go. Choose a seat that matches your child's age, weight and height, and follow the seat's fitting instructions carefully. Infants generally travel rear-facing, and older children should stay in a suitable seat or booster until they fit the adult seat belt properly. If you have a seat you trust, you are welcome to bring it along.
Safety also depends on the journey itself. Ask for regular breaks on longer drives, keep plenty of drinking water on hand, and never leave a child alone in a parked vehicle, even for a moment. A professional driver who knows the roads is one of the most useful safety measures a family can have.
Tell us the ages of your children when you book and we will confirm the seat arrangements. WhatsApp +233 24 915 1503 or email info@carrentalgh.com.
Airport pickups with a family
Arriving at Kotoka International Airport in Accra after a long flight is hard enough with children. Nobody wants to queue for a taxi with a sleepy toddler, a buggy and four suitcases.
Our Kotoka airport transfers start from GH₵450, with a professional driver meeting your family and taking you straight to your hotel or home. Share your flight number and arrival time when you book so we can plan the pickup around your flight.
For the journey from the plane, keep the children's essentials in your hand luggage: a change of clothes, snacks, wipes, a small blanket and any medicine they may need. Keep your phone charged so you can stay in touch with your driver.
If your family is arriving with a lot of luggage, let us know in advance so we can arrange a vehicle with enough room. The RAV4, the Prado or a 14-seater van may suit you better than a standard car.
Book your airport transfer on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503 or email info@carrentalgh.com, and include your flight details.

Family-friendly day trips
Ghana offers easy day trips that suit families, and a driver takes the planning out of the journey.
Aburi Botanical Gardens, set in the Akuapem hills, are a cooler and greener escape from the city. The gardens are a relaxed place for a gentle walk, a picnic and a change of scene for the children. Plan for a morning visit and allow time for a rest stop on the way.
The beaches are a favourite with families. A day by the sea with buckets, spades and a packed lunch gives children a break from car seats. Choose a beach that suits your family and check local conditions before you set off, especially for swimming.
Ada is another good option for a day out on the coast near the Volta estuary. It is a longer drive, so plan an early start, pack plenty of water and snacks, and allow for stops along the way.
Whichever trip you choose, plan around naps and mealtimes. Leave room for flexibility, because a relaxed afternoon is often more memorable than a packed itinerary.
