Shopping & Errands With a Driver in Accra: The Easy Way Around Town

If you have ever tried to park in Accra on a Saturday, you already know the feeling. The car park is full, a delivery van is blocking the lane, and by the time you find a bay your list has doubled. Shopping and errands are where a car with a professional driver earns its keep. You get the car, the driver takes the wheel, and you get to focus on what you actually came to do. This guide walks through how it works across the malls and markets we cover, when an hourly or half-day block makes more sense than a full day, which vehicle suits a big shop, and how to book.

Why a Driver Makes Accra Shopping Easier

Most people think of a driver as a luxury for airport runs or long trips out of town. In practice, a driver is one of the most useful things you can have for a busy day of errands in Accra. Here is what changes when someone else is at the wheel:

  • No parking stress. Your driver finds the spot and manages the car. You are not circling a car park with a trolley on one arm, hunting for a bay.
  • The driver waits and helps. Pop into a shop, come back out with three bags, and the car is already at the door. Your driver waits nearby and helps carry the heavy items to the boot.
  • You keep the car between stops. Instead of walking back and forth to find a taxi or returning to a parked car, the vehicle stays with you. Your bags stay in one place and so do you.
  • Traffic becomes someone else's problem. Accra traffic is part of the day. A local driver knows which roads tend to jam at certain hours and can route you around the worst of it, so your energy goes on the shopping.

The result is a calmer day. You are not juggling keys, tickets, a phone map and a shopping list all at once. You have one plan and one person helping you carry it out.

The Malls: Accra Mall, West Hills, Marina, Palace and Achimota

Accra has a good range of malls, and most of our shopping hires start at one of these five. Each suits a slightly different kind of trip, so pick by what you need to get done.

  • Accra Mall: a large centre on the Spintex Road side of town, with a wide range of stores, supermarkets and places to eat. It is among the busiest on weekends, which makes a driver especially useful here.
  • West Hills Mall: at Weija on the western side of the city, a practical stop if your errands take you that way or toward Kasoa.
  • Marina Mall: close to the airport area. It is handy if you are picking up something before a flight or arriving at Kotoka and want to stop on the way. If you need a transfer to or from Kotoka, our airport transfers start from GH₵450.
  • Palace Mall: a convenient stop for everyday shopping, and a good anchor for grouping several nearby errands into one run.
  • Achimota Retail Centre: on the Achimota side of town, useful for household shopping and for combining with other stops in the north-west of Accra.

A practical tip: on weekends and during busy seasons, mall car parks fill quickly and the queues to get out can be long. Ask your driver to drop you at the entrance nearest your first shop. The car then goes to a waiting spot or circles back for you, so you do not have to fight for a space at all.

The Markets: Makola, Kaneshie and Madina

Markets are where Accra really shows itself, and they are also where a car is most awkward. Narrow lanes, heavy foot traffic and vendors spilling onto the road make parking near the stalls almost impossible. Our advice is to let the driver handle the approach while you handle the shopping.

  • Makola Market in central Accra is the classic choice for fabric, household goods, food and everyday items. Go early if you want the widest choice and the calmest lanes.
  • Kaneshie Market on the western side is busy and practical, good for fresh produce, provisions and household supplies.
  • Madina Market in the north is popular for groceries, clothing and daily needs, and is a sensible option if you are already travelling through that part of town.

To make a market run work with a driver, agree the drop-off point before you set off, tell the driver roughly how long you need, and carry a little cash. Mobile Money is convenient in supermarkets and larger shops, but many market traders still prefer cash. Your driver can wait on the nearest safe road while you shop, then help carry your purchases back. If you are buying anything fragile, mention it early so the boot can be packed with care.

Hourly and Half-Day Hire for Running Several Errands

Not every day needs a full-day hire. For a focused errand run, an hourly or half-day block is often the sensible choice. These blocks are arranged on quote, so tell us what you need and we will price it for your route.

A typical errand run might look like this: a pharmacy and the bank in the morning, a supermarket shop, a stop at the hardware or electronics shop, then lunch. That is a lot of stops, and a driver makes them all possible in one go. The trick is to plan before you book.

  • List your stops and rough times. Note which ones you need to walk into and which are quick pick-ups.
  • Group by area. Stops close together should run together, so the car is not crossing the city three times.
  • Put heavy and cold items last. Leave the big shop and any chilled or frozen goods to the end of the route, so they are not sitting in a warm car for hours.
  • Build in buffer time. Accra traffic is unpredictable. Leave room between stops rather than cramming them in.

Send us your list when you book and we will suggest the order and a realistic block length. If the day turns out longer than planned, tell your driver early and we will sort out the extra time with you.

Picking the Right Vehicle for a Big Shop

The right car depends on how much you are carrying and how many people are coming with you. Here is a simple way to choose, using our published daily rates:

  • Toyota Corolla, from GH₵800 per day: comfortable and economical for small errands, one or two people and light shopping. Less ideal if the boot will be full of bulky items.
  • Toyota RAV4, GH₵1,200 per day: our usual pick for a proper weekly shop, several bags, or bulky purchases such as a sack of rice, a crate of drinks or boxed goods. It gives you good boot space and an easy height for loading.
  • Toyota Prado, GH₵1,600 per day: the roomiest of the three, good for bigger groups, long shopping days or when you want extra space for a large haul.

If you are travelling with several people or buying items that will not fit comfortably in a standard boot, say so when you book. We will tell you what is available for your date and suggest the best fit rather than guessing. For hourly or half-day errand blocks, the time block is quoted separately, so share your plan and we will price it properly.

How to Book Your Shopping Trip

Booking is simple, and you do not pay through a website. Here is how it works:

  • Message us on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503 with your date, pick-up point, the stops you need and roughly how long you expect to be out. A short voice note or a quick list is perfectly fine.
  • Or email info@carrentalgh.com if you prefer to write everything down in one place.
  • Get your quote. Daily hires are priced from the rates above. Hourly and half-day blocks are quoted to your route.
  • Confirm and pay by Mobile Money, bank transfer or cash.

Booking a little ahead helps, especially for Saturdays and for runs through the busiest malls. Tell us your plan and we will help you shape it so the day runs smoothly from the first stop to the last.

Frequently asked questions

Does the driver wait while I shop and help with my bags?
Yes. The driver stays with the car and waits while you shop, then comes to help you carry your bags to the boot. If you expect a long stop, tell us when you book so we can plan the timing and the best place for the car to wait.
Can I hire by the hour or the half-day for errands?
Yes. Hourly and half-day blocks are available on quote. Send us your stops and we will price the block for your route. For a full day of shopping, the daily rate applies, starting from GH₵800 for a Corolla, GH₵1,200 for a RAV4 and GH₵1,600 for a Prado.
Which vehicle should I choose for a big shop?
For a proper weekly shop or several heavy bags, a RAV4 is our usual choice because of its boot space. A Prado suits bigger groups or very large hauls. A Corolla works well for light shopping and one or two people. Tell us what you are buying and how many are travelling, and we will recommend the best fit.
Can I do several errands in one trip?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to hire a driver. Group your stops by area, leave the big shop and any chilled goods until the end, and build in some buffer time for traffic. Send us your list when you book and we will help you work out the order.
Are the malls or the markets better for shopping?
It depends on what you need. Malls are good for a wide range of stores, supermarkets and places to eat, and they are easier for a relaxed trip with a clear plan. Markets are better for fresh produce, fabric and bulk everyday items. Many people do both, and a driver makes switching between the two much easier.
How do I book and pay?
Message us on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503 or email info@carrentalgh.com with your date, pick-up point and stops. We will send a quote. You pay by Mobile Money, bank transfer or cash. Payment is not taken through a website.
