How to Plan a 7-Day Ghana Trip from Accra (With a Driver)

Seven days is enough to see the best of southern Ghana from Accra, as long as the pacing is honest and someone else handles the roads. Here is a practical week of castles, forest, lake views and beach time, built around a car with a professional driver.

Why seven days works for southern Ghana

A week is a comfortable amount of time for southern Ghana. From Accra you can reach the cool hills of Aburi, the lake and dam at Akosombo, the forts of Cape Coast and Elmina, the canopy walkways at Kakum and a stretch of Atlantic beach, all without a single domestic flight. Seven days lets you see the variety of the region, from busy city streets to quiet forest, without feeling like you are ticking boxes from a window.

The challenge is that these places are spread out, and the roads are part of the experience. Traffic in and around Accra can turn a short distance into a long morning, and half a day on the road is not unusual. That is why this itinerary is built around a car with a professional driver. Every CarRentalGH hire includes a driver, so you can enjoy the views, stop for photos at the right moments and ask questions about what you are seeing, while someone else handles the traffic, the parking and the route.

Treat this as a template rather than a rulebook. Swap days, drop places you have already seen, or add extra time on the beach if that is what you need. The sections below walk through the week day by day, explain the pacing, and end with the practical details you need before you book.

The week at a glance

Here is the outline. Days 1 and 2 are based in Accra, days 3 and 4 take you inland to the hills and the lake, and days 5 to 7 cover the coast, the forest and a final beach morning.

  • Day 1: Arrive at Kotoka International Airport, transfer into Accra and settle in.
  • Day 2: Accra city: Independence Square, Jamestown, Makola Market, the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre and Osu.
  • Day 3: Aburi Botanical Gardens and the cooler air of the Aburi hills.
  • Day 4: Akosombo, the Adomi Bridge and a boat trip on Lake Volta.
  • Day 5: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, with an early start.
  • Day 6: The Kakum National Park canopy walkway, then a coastal beach or the drive back.
  • Day 7: A relaxed beach morning in Labadi, Bojo or Ada, then departure.

Two things shape the whole week. The Cape Coast and Elmina day is the longest, so it needs the earliest start. The Accra days and the Aburi day are short, which leaves room to rest, shop or simply sit somewhere cool. Build your week around those two facts and the rest tends to fall into place.

Days 1 and 2: Arrival and Accra

Day 1 is about arriving and settling in. Kotoka International Airport is a drive that can take anything from 20 minutes to well over an hour, depending on the time of day, and our airport transfers start from GH₵450. A driver waiting for you after the flight means you are not bargaining with a taxi while juggling bags. Take the first evening gently: eat near where you are staying, sleep early and let the time difference settle.

Day 2 is the city, and it rewards a clear plan. Start at Independence Square, the grand open space next to the Black Star Gate and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum. Then head to Jamestown, the old fishing quarter by the sea, with its historic lighthouse and streets that feel very different from the modern city centre. Visit Makola Market in the late morning, when the stalls are busy but still manageable, and carry small cedi notes for snacks, fabric and souvenirs.

In the afternoon, the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre is a quiet, thoughtful stop. Du Bois spent his final years in Ghana and is buried there, and the centre tells that story in a way that connects Ghana with the wider African diaspora. End the day in Osu, where restaurants and bars stay lively into the night. Accra is best done in short hops. Your driver can drop you at one place, wait while you look around, then move you on to the next, which saves a great deal of effort in a busy city.

Days 3 and 4: Aburi hills and Akosombo on Lake Volta

Day 3 is a change of air. The Aburi Botanical Gardens sit in the hills above the city, where the temperature drops and the trees feel shady and green. The trip takes roughly an hour each way in normal traffic. Walk the shaded paths slowly, have lunch with a view, and let the afternoon stretch out at your own pace before heading back to Accra. Because the day is short on driving, it is also a good time to rest your legs before the longer days ahead.

Day 4 is the lake. Akosombo is roughly one and a half to two hours from Accra on a clear road, and the drive itself shows you a good deal of the Eastern Region landscape. The Adomi Bridge offers a good view over the Volta River, and a boat trip on Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, makes a memorable half-day. Ask your driver to time the boat for late morning. That leaves room to eat well afterward and head back before the afternoon traffic builds.

Pairing these two days works well in the middle of a week. You get cooler air, water views and a break from crowds, without the longer travel times that come with the coastal castles. It is also the stretch where a driver who knows the roads earns their keep, because the best timing for the lake and the hills is rarely the obvious one.

Days 5 and 6: Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum

This is the longest stretch, and the one that rewards discipline. Cape Coast is roughly two to three hours west of Accra in ordinary traffic, and it can take longer on a busy weekend or after heavy rain. Aim to leave Accra by about 7am. You will avoid the worst of the traffic, reach the castles before the tour groups build up, and keep the afternoon free.

On day 5, visit Cape Coast Castle, where the history of the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans is told plainly and with care. A guided tour is worth the time, because the guides explain what happened in the rooms and passages you walk through. Then continue a short drive to Elmina Castle, the older Portuguese-built fort, which has its own deep and sobering history. Allow a full day for both castles and the drive between them. Go in expecting a heavy day, and plan something calm afterward, such as a simple meal by the sea.

Day 6 is the forest. Kakum National Park sits a short drive inland from Cape Coast, and its canopy walkway is a set of suspension bridges hung high above the trees. Go early, when it is cooler and quieter, and wear shoes with good grip. Afterward you have two good options: spend the afternoon at a beach near Cape Coast, or head back towards Accra and stop in Kasoa, which sits on the way. If you would rather not drive back after the castles, ask us about a night on the coast so that the heaviest day does not end with a long road home.

Day 7 and practical tips: pace, one driver, budget and booking

Day 7 is for slowing down. Spend the morning on the sand at Labadi, Bojo or the Ada stretch east of Accra, where the beaches are a comfortable drive from the city centre. Eat fresh fish, read a book in the shade and let the week settle. Then leave with a buffer. Traffic around the airport can be heavy, and international departures need time for check-in, so allow more time than you think you need.

Three things make this kind of week run smoothly:

  • Keep the same driver all week. A driver who has done the route learns your pace, knows where to stop for water and remembers what you enjoyed the day before. Continuity is one of the biggest comforts of a multi-day hire.
  • Ask for a 7-day quote. Multi-day hires get a better per-day rate than daily hire, so one quote for the whole week is usually better value than booking day by day.
  • Budget for more than the car. Starting prices are GH₵1,200 a day for a RAV4 and GH₵1,600 a day for a Prado with driver. Your total will also include entry fees at the castles, Kakum and the lake boat trip, plus meals and a tip for your driver and guides. The exact figure depends on vehicle, dates and route.

Frequently asked questions

Is seven days enough to see southern Ghana from Accra?
Yes, for a well-paced first trip. This plan covers Accra, the Aburi hills, Lake Volta at Akosombo, the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, Kakum and a beach. If you want a slower trip, drop Akosombo or cut one city day and give the beach more time instead.
How much driving is each day?
Accra days involve short hops, but traffic makes them slower than the distance suggests. Aburi takes roughly an hour each way, Akosombo about one and a half to two hours, and Cape Coast two to three hours from Accra in ordinary traffic. Kakum is a short drive from Cape Coast. Expect the castle day to be the longest, and start early.
Can the route be customised?
Yes. Many travellers swap days around, add a longer stay in Cape Coast, or include Kasoa and the Ada stretch on the way. Tell us your interests, whether that is history, nature, food or beaches, and we can shape the days to fit. Your driver can also adjust timings on the day if you want more time at a particular place.
What does a week's car cost?
Starting prices are from GH₵1,200 a day for a RAV4 and from GH₵1,600 a day for a Prado with driver. A seven-day booking gets a better per-day rate than daily hire, so ask for a quote that lists the vehicle, the dates and any extra costs. The final total depends on the vehicle, your route and how many days you book.
Can we keep the same driver for the whole week?
Ask for it when you book, and we will do our best to arrange it. The same driver knows the roads, learns your pace and makes each day feel like part of one trip. It is one of the biggest advantages of a multi-day hire, and it is worth asking for early.
How do I book and pay?
