How to Pay for Car Hire in Ghana: Mobile Money, Cash & Currency

Paying for a car with a driver in Ghana should feel simple and clear, and you should never be left guessing about what you are paying or how. This guide explains exactly how payment works with CarRentalGH, from MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money to bank transfer and cash, and how cedis compare with paying in your own currency. It also explains our booking process from start to finish. Nothing is paid on this website. You book by WhatsApp or email, we agree the price with you first, and we do not take card payments. We are based in Accra and Kasoa, and we serve Greater Accra, Kotoka International Airport, Kasoa, Cape Coast and the surrounding coast. Read this once and you will know what to expect before any money changes hands.

Why Mobile Money Is the Easiest Way to Pay

Mobile Money is part of everyday life in Ghana, and for most people it is the simplest way to pay for a car with a driver. You do not need a bank branch, a card terminal or a special app. If your phone is registered on a mobile network, you can send payment straight from your phone.

We accept three services:

  • MTN Mobile Money (MoMo)
  • Telecel Cash
  • AirtelTigo Money

Here is how it usually works. Once we have agreed your booking and your price, we send you the payment number and the exact amount in writing. You send that amount from your phone. Your network may ask you to approve the payment with your PIN, which is a normal security check and not a sign that anything is wrong. When the payment goes through, your network sends you a confirmation message. Keep that message, because it is your record that the money was sent.

Two habits will keep this smooth. First, check the number and the amount on your screen before you approve, especially if you are paying a deposit or a balance. Second, your network may charge a small transfer fee. That fee is set by your provider, not by us, so check their current charges before you send. The amount we agreed is the amount you should send.

What if a payment does not go through? It happens sometimes, for reasons that have nothing to do with your booking, such as a network delay or a low balance. Do not send the same amount twice. Check your phone for the confirmation message first, and if you are not sure whether the money has left your account, message us on WhatsApp with the time and amount you tried to send. We would much rather hear from you and sort it out together than have you guess.

Paying by Bank Transfer

If you prefer to pay from a bank account, bank transfer is available. It suits larger bookings and longer trips, and it suits anyone who already banks this way and wants a clear paper trail.

We share bank transfer details with you privately, by WhatsApp or email, once your booking has been agreed. Please do not rely on account details you see in a social media post, in a message from someone you do not know, or in anything that claims to come from us but does not match what we have sent you. If something looks different, stop and message us on WhatsApp before you transfer anything.

When you transfer, use your name and your booking date as the payment reference if your bank allows it. This makes it easier for us to match your payment to your booking, and it helps you find the payment later. Keep the transfer confirmation from your bank, whether it is a receipt, a screenshot or an email.

Paying Cash

Cash is accepted too. Some people like to pay in cash at the start or the end of a trip, and that is perfectly fine. It can be a good choice for smaller amounts, or for clients who are already in Ghana and prefer not to pay from their phone.

A few sensible habits make cash simple and safe:

  • Agree the amount in writing before you hand over any money, so that you both know exactly what was agreed.
  • Count the notes in front of the person receiving them.
  • Ask for a receipt, even a handwritten one, showing the date, the amount and what it covers.
  • Keep a note of when and where the payment was made.

If you are carrying a large amount, think about whether Mobile Money or a bank transfer would be safer for you. Cash is always your choice, and we will not push you towards any particular method.

Paying in Cedis or in Your Own Currency

The local currency is the Ghana cedi, written GH₵, and our rates are quoted in cedis. For example, a Toyota Corolla is from GH₵800 per day, a Toyota RAV4 is from GH₵1,200 per day, and a transfer from Kotoka International Airport is from GH₵450.

Many visitors would rather pay in their own currency, and that is possible. Because exchange rates move, we agree the exact amount and the rate in writing before you send anything. That way the figure you pay is the figure we both agreed, with no surprises when the payment arrives. Your own bank or money transfer service may also charge a fee for converting currency, so check that before you send.

As a simple guide, if your booking is three days in a Corolla at the starting rate, the vehicle alone comes to at least GH₵2,400 before any extras we agree together. Ask us for the total in your own currency before you decide how you would like to pay.

How Quotes, Deposits and Booking Work

Nothing is paid on this website. The website is there to give you information about our service. To book, you contact us on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503, or by email at info@carrentalgh.com. Tell us where you are going, when, how many people are travelling, and roughly how many hours or days you need. We then reply with a quote.

A good quote is clear. It should show the vehicle, the professional driver, the dates and the hours or days, the pick-up point and any route you have discussed, and the total in the currency you will pay in. If something is not included, we tell you so that you can decide with full information. Ask us anything you are unsure about before you agree.

Some bookings may ask for a deposit to hold a date. Whether one applies depends on your booking, so we tell you clearly during the quote. If a deposit is needed, we tell you the amount, how to pay it and what it covers, before you send any money.

Once the quote is agreed and any deposit is settled, we confirm your booking in writing. The balance is paid as set out in that agreed quote.

Getting a Receipt and Why Our Payments Are Transparent

Whichever method you use, ask for a receipt for every payment. For Mobile Money and bank transfers, keep the confirmation message or screenshot, which shows the date, the amount and the reference. For cash, ask for a written receipt showing the date, the amount and what the payment is for.

Keep your quote and your booking messages together as well. If you ever need to check what was agreed, the whole trail sits in one place: the price, the payment and the confirmation.

We believe transparency is the foundation of trust. That is why the price is agreed before any payment is made, why we offer clear and familiar payment options, and why we will never ask you to pay through an unfamiliar link, a third-party app or a card form. If anyone asks you to pay in a way that does not match this guide, stop and contact us directly on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503 before you send anything.

Frequently asked questions

Do you accept credit or debit cards?
No. We do not accept credit or debit card payments. You can pay by MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money, bank transfer or cash, in cedis or in your own currency if we agree it in advance.
How does Mobile Money work for car hire?
Once we have agreed your booking and price, we send you the payment number and the exact amount in writing. You send that amount from your MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AirtelTigo Money account and approve it on your phone. Check the number and the amount before you approve, and keep the confirmation message your network sends you as your record.
Can I pay in foreign currency?
Yes, you can pay in your own currency if we agree it. We confirm the exact amount and the exchange rate in writing before you send anything. Your own bank or money transfer service may charge a fee for converting currency, so check that first.
Is there a deposit?
Some bookings may need a deposit to hold a date. Whether one applies depends on your booking, so we tell you during the quote. If a deposit is needed, we tell you the amount, how to pay it and what it covers before you send any money.
Do I pay on your website?
No. The website does not take payment. To book, message us on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503 or email info@carrentalgh.com. We agree the price with you first, and then you pay by one of the agreed methods.
How do I get a receipt?
Ask for one for every payment. For Mobile Money and bank transfers, keep the confirmation message or screenshot showing the date, the amount and the reference. For cash, ask for a written receipt showing the date, the amount and what the payment is for.
