Accra has more beach within a short drive than many visitors expect, from a lively city stretch to a lagoon crossing and a quieter fishing coast. Here is an honest guide to the options, with rough drive times, what each one is good for, and how a professional driver makes the whole day easier.

Most people planning a beach day near Accra ask the same question first: how far is too far? For a single day with a driver, a sensible limit is about two hours each way, and most of the best options sit comfortably inside that. Traffic matters more than distance. A stretch that looks short on a map can take 40 minutes at a bad hour and much longer in the rain, so we always suggest leaving early and building in some slack.
It helps to think of the coast in rings. Labadi is the city beach, close and busy. Bojo and Kokrobite lie west of the city and make a comfortable half-day or full-day trip. Further out, west past Kasoa and east beyond Tema, are the resort-based and fishing-village beaches that suit a longer, slower day.
Every beach below is a real option within our service area, but conditions change. Sea swimming can be rough at some spots, facilities vary from place to place, and fees are not always fixed. Treat each profile as a starting point, and ask your driver for the latest advice on the day itself.

Labadi, often called La Pleasure Beach, is the best-known city beach in Accra and the easiest first stop from central Accra. Depending on traffic, expect roughly 20 to 40 minutes from the centre. It is busiest at weekends and on public holidays, when there is usually live music, food sellers and beach bars along the sand.
Labadi suits people who want energy rather than peace: groups of friends, a birthday lunch, or a visitor who wants a taste of city life by the sea. It is not the place for a quiet swim. The surf can be strong and the crowds can be large, so keep an eye on children, never leave bags unattended, and ask locals which stretch is safest for swimming on the day.
Some areas and events at Labadi may charge an entry fee, and arrangements change, so check before you go. With a driver, you can drop everyone at the sand, have the car looked after while you are there, and skip the parking scramble that puts many people off city beaches. Plan for a late afternoon departure if you want to avoid the heaviest traffic on the way back.
Bojo Beach sits west of Accra near Bortianor, and it is one of the most distinctive day trips on this list. The road brings you close, but the beach itself is reached by a short canoe crossing over a lagoon, and that crossing is part of the fun. The water on this side is usually calm, and the setting feels far removed from the city, even though it is only about an hour away in normal traffic.
Bojo is good for a relaxed swim, a long lunch and a quiet afternoon. It works well for couples, small groups of friends, and anyone who wants something different from the usual beach strip. Expect to pay a small canoe fare, and carry only what you need across, since you will be handling your bag in a boat.
Practical notes: the final approach to the landing can be bumpy, so tell us your party size and luggage and we will suggest a suitable vehicle. Agree with your driver where you will meet after the crossing, keep your phone charged, and pack valuables in a dry bag. Ask the driver to confirm the pick-up point before you cross, so nobody is left waiting on the wrong side of the lagoon.
Kokrobite is about 45 minutes west of Accra on a normal run, and its slower pace is exactly what many people come for. It is a beach village rather than a resort, with simple restaurants, beach chairs and an easygoing crowd. Big Milly's Backyard is the name most visitors know, and it is known for its drumming and reggae, especially in the evenings and at weekends.
Kokrobite is a strong choice for a relaxed lunch, an afternoon by the sea and a sunset with live music. It suits couples, groups of friends who want to talk rather than shout over a speaker, and families looking for calm, with the caveat that you should check the surf and watch young children closely. A good plan is to arrive around late morning, eat lunch on the beach, and head back before the evening traffic builds up on the main road.
Costs here are mostly food, drinks and any beach chairs or shade you hire, though it is worth asking about any charges on arrival. If you want a particular table at a particular spot, ask ahead, especially at weekends when the village is busiest.

When you want a longer day, the coast opens up in both directions. To the west, beyond Kasoa, you will find resort-based beaches around Gomoa Fetteh and the fishing communities near Senya Beraku. The drive is usually one and a half to two hours from central Accra, depending on traffic, so this is a day for a driver who can keep you on schedule. Many of the beaches here are attached to resorts that charge a day-use fee or a minimum spend, which is useful to know if you want shade, toilets, a pool or a secure place to change.
East of Tema, Prampram is a good middle option at roughly an hour from Accra, with resorts and fishing life along the shore. Ningo lies further east and suits a quieter day. Sakumono is different: it is better known as a lagoon and bird-watching area near Tema than as a swimming beach, so go for a walk and the view rather than the sea.
For a bigger day, Ada is further east at the mouth of the Volta River, roughly two hours or more from Accra. Boat trips out to where the river meets the sea are a highlight when conditions allow. Ada works best as a full day with a driver, not as a quick stop on the way to somewhere else.
The easiest way to enjoy a beach day is to stop thinking about the road. Every CarRentalGH hire includes a professional driver, so you can relax in the back, make calls, and decide on the way whether to stop for a second beach. Beach-hopping works best with two neighbouring stops, such as Bojo and Kokrobite, which both lie west of the city. Three stops in one day usually means more time in the car than on the sand.
Choose the vehicle to fit the group. A Corolla from GH₵800 per day suits a small group travelling light. A RAV4 from GH₵1,200 per day gives more room and comfort for a few more people or bags. A Prado with driver from GH₵1,600 per day is a good match for families with coolers, chairs and beach gear, or for rougher access roads. For a larger group, the 30-seat Coaster from GH₵2,200 per day keeps everyone together. If you are landing at Kotoka International Airport and want to go straight to the beach, airport transfers start from GH₵450.
